“I’m looking forward to being able to help marketeers and business owners start the process of turning their Instagram profile from something they feel they ‘need’ to do, to something that actually generates results for them.”
David Glenwright is the head of training and special projects at JC Social Media, based in Birmingham. JC Social Media are a specialist social media agency. It provides digital marketing services to companies of all shapes and sizes across the UK. David is a tech week regular and it’s great to have him back after his incredibly successful social media training event last year.
We sat down with David to talk about his event ‘Unlocking Instagram for Business,’ as well as how he got into the tech world and what he’s looking forward to about Tech Week.
How did you get into the tech world?
In short – by accident! I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2012 with a degree in War Studies, which as you can imagine is a slightly more unusual degree. When I left university I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. While I was a student I had gotten heavily involved in the student union. I was one of the first student reps to live-tweet the meetings, and it was there that my interest in social media began. Then, I started looking around for digital marketing jobs. I was fortunate enough to join JC Social Media as an account manager, running the accounts for a big healthcare client. I’ve not looked back ever since!
Tell us a bit about your Birmingham Tech Week event
I’m going to be giving a talk all about unlocking Instagram for businesses. Since 2017 I’ve been accredited as a trainer by Facebook, as part of their She Means Business programme. This initiative is all about providing training, sharing stories and celebrating success with female entrepreneurs and marketeers. So far it has helped over 500,000 women around the world. This session that I’m running as part of Birmingham Tech Week will share some of the biggest tips, tricks and techniques that will help businesses to really start using Instagram to grow and engage with their audiences.
What are you most looking forward to about your event?
More than anything, I’m looking forward to being able to help marketeers and business owners start the process of turning their Instagram profile from something they feel they ‘need’ to do, to something that actually generates results for them. We’ll discuss what success can look like on Instagram, how best to optimise your profile. We will also cover what Facebook plans to do with this platform in the next year. There will be something for absolutely everyone in this session!
What are you most looking forward to about Birmingham Tech Week?
I was involved in Birmingham Tech Week last year, and there were two things that really stood out. I’m looking forward to seeing them again this year. First of all, the sheer wealth of talent that exists here in Birmingham is amazing. Every speaker I heard from was a genuine expert in their field. The lineup this year confirms that that talent has only grown. More than that though, I was blown away by the enthusiasm and desire of so many people to want to learn and expand their horizons. Last year we had so many people turn up for my talk that we had to find another room! We’re not going to have that problem this year of course, but it’s fantastic to see that there is a genuine hunger in Birmingham to both learn and share ideas.
‘Unlocking Instagram for Business’ is taking place on Wednesday 14th October at 10:15am. Click here to attend.
