In this talk, I’ll share how I identified a critical gap in the Dagster ecosystem (with 43+ developers upvoting the need) and built a production-ready Kafka integration instead of waiting for someone else to solve it. I’ll discuss the practical mindset shift from “someone should build this” to “I can build this,” along with strategies for validating community needs, overcoming technical challenges, and sharing solutions effectively.
Key takeaways for attendees:
This talk aims to inspire developers of all levels to become problem-solvers rather than problem-reporters in their technical communities.

Developers’ worlds have become increasingly complex; with tools, AI and ops all increasing cognitive load to the point of overwhelm. A new discipline has emerged in the last 7/8 years that is aimed at providing self-service tooling, automation and “golden paths” for Developers.
On the surface, Platform Engineering appears to be reserved for large-scale orgs, with vast hordes of Developers and enough Engineers to have a dedicated Platform team. But what if that’s not the case? What if Platform Engineering can be for every team, no matter its size?
This talk will give an overview of Platform Engineering, and look at ways that it can be adopted by any team.
AI is now part of our workflows in building things, either as copilots or tools to develop everything from scratch. However, it’s still so new that we get AI-slop if we aren’t careful. We’ll discuss where AI should be used in its current form & what tools you need to get your products off the ground.
